Why Buy Used Books Online?

Reading should not be considered a luxury these days. It should be easy enough to get a hold of reading materials one can use while waiting for your turn at the dentist’s or a perpetually tardy friend at the bus stop. You do not only make good use of your time and get rid of boredom, but you also do so while enriching your mind with new information or mentally traveling to a different time and place with a novel’s characters. For some people, however, especially those whose interests do not really have reading at the top of the list, going to the bookstore could be wearisome and these things are just too expensive. The best way to deal with this predicament is to buy used books online.

A lot of people who like to read have a huge collection of books, and most of these books are read only at least once—twice or thrice if they are their favorites. After that, they are just kept in their shelves, accumulating dust and yellowing their pages. The more sensible owners sell those they are likely not to read again. Today, there is an abundant supply from which you can buy used books online.

As with everything else, there are disadvantages when you buy used books online and they include not getting the chance to scan a couple of pages to get a feel of the story before you buy the book. Another con is that you cannot check the merchandise because, being secondhand books, they would need more careful inspection to see if pages have been torn or have dog-eared corners. There may also be doodles on pages that do not allow you to read the book text. This, however, is greatly overshadowed by the no-hassle idea that you can just browse through a website and look for the genre you like. You can browse through the books in the selected genre by author or title, add your picks to your “cart,” and pay for them with your credit card. You don’t have to step out of your house to make the order or to pick up the merchandise. You just have to pay extra for shipping, although there are usually discounts for a higher number of purchases. This is easily compensated for by the cheap prices of the books. They can go as low as 10% of the original price, even for hardbound bestsellers. That should be a plus for those who have always wanted to read the classics or highly acclaimed novels but never got to doing so because they quickly get sold out in bookstores or were simply too costly. Book collectors would also find online used book shopping a great way to scavenge for old books they might be lacking in their libraries or rare books collection. It wouldn’t matter to them if the books are not in very good a condition anymore, as long as they are authentic and they will complete their set. What’s for certain is that buying used books online has its pros for anyone and everyone.

Another ISBN number is listed because it could be a international version. Another time, it is because it is just another ISBN listed. A book can have 2 ISBN numbers listed. One is the 10-digits number and the other one is 13-digits numbers.

Usually, if it a international version – the seller will say it.

Amazon mostly. B&N is overpriced so I rarely shop there online. I do go there when I'm physically shopping, because it's such a short walk/drive from my house and Border's (which I usually prefer) is an ordeal of a drive away in the next city over.

Half.com has used books, but I've found deliveries to be unreliable and quality doubly unreliable.
The best places I find used kids' books are actually at yard sales. That way you can see what shape they're in and you don't have to pay shipping.

I've personally always had great luck with Amazon.
