Instead of reminding him of how many pages he has to yet read, praise him for what he HAS read. Make him feel good about accomplishing the reading of a book. Discuss WHAT he liked about the ones he does like. That may lead you to ideas of other books he might like in the future.

When he lists statistics of how many books you said he would like but he didn't, recite a few of ones you said he would like and he did. Let him know that just because he starts a book, he doesn't have to finish if it really and truly bores him.

Many boys who are getting to be middle school age like non-fiction. You might suggest he browse a few books on subjects that interest him. There's such a variety, from athletes to zoology. Don't overlook non-fiction!

Also, don't worry about the fact that he doesn't choose to read a book as opposed to watching TV. Almost all kids his age are unduly influenced by the interests of their peers – that's much more important to them than the interests of their family members, or even their own best interests. If his peers don't read, he won't read either; or at least won't want them to know he reads. That doesn't mean that he won't develop a life-long love of reading. When he does, he'll thank you for your efforts! Personally, I admire you for going out of your way to help him. Keep up the good work!
